No Brewer, No Bacteria: What Purdue Found About Shared Coffee Makers

There are coffee makers everywhere, making countless cups of coffee every day, but how often are they getting cleaned, and how clean are they really? To take a closer look, Java House partnered with Purdue Food Entrepreneurship and Manufacturing Institute (FEMI) to further investigate this.

The overall goal of this project was for the FEMI team to assess the food safety of these different coffee makers and brewers. At Java House, our Peel & Pour Pods completely eliminate the need for a coffee brewer. They are a single serve pod format that you easily peel and pour over hot or cold water for barista quality beverages ready in seconds.

The FEMI team, made up of Purdue’s College of Agriculture staff scientists and undergraduate students, worked over a four-month period testing 21 different coffee maker models. These models are ones that are typically found in home kitchens, offices, or other shared spaces.

Overall, the FEMI’s research revealed that shared coffee brewers carry elevated levels of bacteria and mold across multiple components of the machine. They believe these elevated levels were related to users not properly cleaning machines, and hot water alone is not sanitizing them.

Due to these findings, the FEMI team found that a product like Java House Peel & Pour Pods carries little to no risk for contamination. Offering a safer and cleaner option compared to traditional coffee makers, especially in a shared space.
